The most important part of data science will be understanding where exactly to apply AI.

In the next ten years, what will be the most important skill needed in data science? Hint: it’s not Tensorflow, it’s not GPT-3, and it’s not the next fancy deep learning algorithm. The most important skill you need is actually applying good data science judgment.

Almost no one does machine learning by hand

Remember when machine learning was really hard? Before you could actually write train_test_split XGBoostClassifier and build a model in five lines? Personally, I don’t. But this was the reality for the creators of sci-kit learn, tensorflow, and all the other machine learning libraries we’ve come to depend on in the 2020s. Because the creators of…

Software engineering applies the principles of engineering to the problem of software development

Whether you’re new to the job market or simply contemplating the next steps in your career, the field of computer science can be a bit of a maze to navigate, filled with twists and turns. It seems like as the tech sector continues to grow, entire professions emerge out of thin air, or duties that used to be the province of one profession have grown to be a regular expectation in another.

Today, we’ll take a look at the fields of software engineering (an older, more traditional tech profession) and machine learning (the word that seems to be on everybody’s…

Data Analyst Interview Questions

Here’s a joke: what do you call a data analyst that lives in California? A data scientist.

While maybe the unsexy data side-kick, the role of the data analyst has been growing steadily each year and taking on more and more of the responsibilities of a data scientist. A data analyst’s typical responsibilities include assigning numerical values to crucial business functions to access and compare their performance over time.

In essence, a data analyst will analyze, visualize, and present data. Each company has their own databases that a data analyst will query from, as well as dash-boarding tools like Tableau…

If you’re applying for a job in the field of data science, data engineering, or business analytics, there’s a good chance that you’ll have to work with SQL at one point or another. Knowing how to manage and query your own data is incredibly important in these fields. If you’re new to SQL, or need to brush off a rusty set of skills to address the current marketplace, it can be difficult to figure out what you need to know about SQL in order to be competitive in your field.

That being said, here are the basics:

The data science career path from junior to senior data scientist varies greatly in skill level, responsibilities, daily tasks, and everyone’s favorite topic- total compensation.

For any kind of technical role, including data science, there are two paths: the management path and the individual contributor path.

The individual contributor path includes data scientists who work on core projects, contribute code, run analyses, and build ETL pipelines and machine learning models. The management path encompasses data scientists who manage people, scale data strategy, and work on fitting the pieces of a data organization together.

Both paths originate from the same journey…

How many A/B test variants has your email inbox been subjugated to throughout Black Friday? Only a decade or two before, marketers were mostly flying blind on any commercials and posters for sales and promotions.

Now the average e-commerce company probably runs one too many A/B tests on their customers. At Interview Query we tried something similar for our Black Friday promotion by offering 25% off and sending an email about it.

My goal was to run an experiment to learn about how much email copy and content matters. …

Today I’m writing about how I hired a data scientist for my company, Interview Query, by applying data science to the hiring process. My first time hiring a data scientist really opened my eyes to being on the other side of the table after spending years interviewing as a candidate.

There were three main take-aways that I want to dive into.

  1. Define the data science role and responsibilities. Know exactly what the data scientist will be working on.
  2. Evaluate candidates at scale with automated testing and rubrics, and not endless resume reviewing and hiring manager calls.
  3. Creating a metrics based…
